With its extra nutrients and ability to retain more water, volcanic soil provides the perfect environment for apple trees to do their magic. Because Hood River is home to the inactive volcano Mt. Hood, its volcanic soil is au naturel. As for Yakima Valley? Its soil turned volcanic after nearby Mt. St. Helens erupted in 1983, blowing volcanic ash its way. Now with a top layer of volcanic soil, Yakima Valley’s growing conditions have never been better.

3. Apple trees quench their thirst with pure mountain snow water
When mountain snow melts, the water flows to the fields below. Because both Hood River and Yakima Valley are nestled below major mountains, water doesn’t have to travel very far to reach their orchards. Mt. Hood alone gets an astonishing 500 inches of snow every year. Yakima Valley gets an extra 100 inches of snow and rain from its local mountains. Through an elaborate irrigation system, Yakima Valley’s apple trees are able to soak up the pure mountain water to grow its irresistibly juicy apples.
