It started 30 years ago when founder Jimmy Rosenberg hand-picked and squeezed an orange from his backyard in pursuit of the most authentic juice experience. No artificial flavors. No heat pasteurization. Just seriously delicious juice. Three decades later, our commitment to taste is as strong as ever. Only, the oranges don’t come from Jimmy’s backyard; and lucky for him, he isn’t hand-squeezing anymore. Here’s how our Fresh Taste Promise comes to life today:
1. We carefully source nature’s finest ingredients.
We might not be in Jimmy’s backyard, but we still like to keep it in our own “backyard.” Proudly, nearly 100% of our citrus and green vegetables come from the Western United States. Those bright & tangy lemons that show up in so many of our juices come from our home state of California—learn more about our citrus sourcing.
Careful sourcing also means we are challenging ourselves to find innovative ways to maintain that optimal taste, like flash-freezing banana puree within hours of harvesting to capture flavor at its peak. It also means sometimes we do things the hard way, like letting our mangoes ripen on the tree to help ensure the finest fruit possible when pureed (versus artificially ripening using gasses like acetylene or ethylene). And those same mangoes are hand-peeled by humans, rather than by machines, to make sure the juicy flesh makes it into the juice and not the pits (because let’s face it, that would be the pits).
Along the way, we are paying attention to the impact we have on the environment and local farming communities. For example, the innovative practice of Second Cut Spinach can make both the earth and farmers happy.
2. We never add artificial flavors (never!).
Why does our Orange Juice taste like oranges and not “OJ”? Because it is just oranges (a whopping 5 per bottle**). And we celebrate the slight variations in flavor & color that naturally occur throughout the year.
If it didn’t come from the ground or a tree, it’s not likely to find its way onto our ingredient lists. Take our Organic Strawberry Lemonade for example—whereas many beverages on the market use “natural flavors” to get that strawberry flavor—we accomplish that bright taste by simply sourcing the best-tasting berries we can find.
And, when it comes to artificial colors, nada. Because Mother Nature is vibrant enough on her own.
3. And our juice is cold-pressed. Never flash pasteurized.
After we source, squeeze, crack, press, and blend our ingredients, we apply pressure equal to five times that found in the deepest part of the ocean. This is called high-pressure processing and it helps protect flavor, color and nutrients while ensuring safety. On the contrary, many juices are heat pasteurized, which can change the flavor. It might not always be the fastest or easiest path, but we are pretty darn proud of the commitment we have made to the best possible taste. We think you will agree. That’s our promise.
